Sensory Neuropathy (SN)

Summary:  Sensory Neuropathy is a degenerative disease in border collies caused by the degradation of sensory nerve cells, leading to a tingling or numb sensation in limbs, self mutilation (due to lack of feeling), urinary incontinence, and/or mobility issues. Symptoms tend to present early in life, before a year old, and can become so severe that quality of life is often called into question within two years of diagnosis.

Screening: Genetic testing for this disease is widely available through various different genetic labs. The recessive nature of the disease means that only dogs with two copies of the gene are affected, while carriers and clear dogs will not be.

Inheritance: Recessive

Ethical breeders shall perform necessary genetic testing and not breed dogs that can produce affected puppies (ie. carrier to carrier OR carrier to affected)
