Shoulders - (OCD) Osteochondritis Dissecans
Summary: Shoulder dysplasia, also known as OCD (Osteochondritis Dissecans), is a condition that results from abnormal joint conformation between the humerus and the scapula, causing bone-on-bone motion and degradation, either bilaterally or unilaterally. The presence of this disorder may have symptoms such as mobility issues, limping, and arthritis, similar to other orthopedic disorders. Surgery and/or supportive care may be available options for dogs diagnosed with this condition. With OCD specifically, there is abnormal development in the joint cartilage. OCD can form in other joints as well, but more commonly in shoulders.
Screening: Available in the U.S. through OFA via radiographs submitted by your veterinarian. Each shoulder is evaluated, with affected shoulders either unilaterally or bilaterally affected.
Inheritance: Unknown
Some Border Collie Breeders utilize this screening, but it is not currently a required health test by the BCSA. It is more commonly seen in larger bodied dog breeds
