Patellar Luxation
Summary: Patellar luxation is a disorder described by the temporary dislocation of the kneecap from its appropriate groove in the femur, unable to stay firmly in place, rated by a grading system to describe severity. This is a common issue in small breed dogs and some large breed. Occurrence in Border Collies is minimal. The discomfort caused by this temporary dislocation can be quite noticeable and most classic symptoms include the sudden reluctance to use one of the rear legs mid-step, and/or walking with one leg carried up and away from the body. Surgical and supportive care options are available and should be discussed with a veterinarian if a dog is suspected to have luxating patellas.
Screening: for this disorder can be done through a small animal veterinarian and submission to the OFA database (if applicable) can be done for a small fee.
Inheritance: Unknown
Some Border Collie Breeders utilize this screening, but it is not currently a required health test by the BCSA. It is more commonly seen and required for small breed dogs and some large breeds.
