Imerslund Grasbeck Syndrome/Intestinal Cobalamin Malabsorption (IGS/ICM/B12)

Summary: IGS is a disease in Border Collies that comes from the inability of the dog’s digestive tract to properly absorb vitamin B-12 (a vital nutrient) through normal processes. The lack of availability of B-12 can lead to anemia, weight loss, and lethargy after eating, as well as other symptoms. Permanent damage can occur if not treated. The disease typically presents very early in puppyhood and has some treatment options currently in use.

Screening:  IGS is a simple recessive disease, meaning complete avoidance of affected puppies can be achieved via testing of breeding dogs. The testing is available through a variety of labs.

Inheritance: Recessive
