Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)

Summary: Collie Eye Anomaly is a recessive genetic disease found in many collie-type breeds, affecting eyesight. The effects of this condition is typically present at birth, caused by the underdevelopment of the blood vessels that provide nutrients to the retina, leading to partial or full blindness. Individuals may present with microphthalmia (smaller than normal eyes), coloboma (hole in the retina) or a variety of other issues as a result.

Screening: The CEA gene has been identified and is easily testable through a variety of labs to identify carriers and affected individuals and may also be diagnosed by a veterinary ophthalmologist.

Inheritance: Recessive

CEA affected dogs should not be produced by ethical Border Collie breeders. Carrier to Normal or Normal to Normal tested breedings should be performed to not produce disease affected puppies.
